Travel over Flowers

The typical image of a successful aging is in leisurely enjoyment of tending a small vegetable garden in a quiet rural village. However, today’s elderly are spending an active time investing in new experiences with enthusiasm. This image was shown in actors from the reality show "Grandpas over Flowers." They were enthusiastic for exploration of Europe. When the program ended, many seniors started travelling across the country saying, "Travel over flowers." Through T map data, we will look into the travel trends of the elderly who believe that travel is a must for a happy life.

A travel in company with history and culture

According to a questionnaire survey conducted by Korea Tourism Association, seniors prefer to make a trip to places embracing historic and cultural meaning. The T map data shows that seniors rarely visit places mostly designed for amusement such as beaches or campsites. On the contrary, the places with historic background such as Korean Folk Village and old Buddhist temples are flooded with seniors. In particular, folk villages perfectly fit travel preferences of seniors in that the places not only stimulate their nostalgia of "good old days" but also serve as historic sites.

Regarding travel of the elderly, we first think of seniors as a big group who go trekking in nice outdoor clothing along the trail of famous mountains across the country. They love trekking mainly because of the presence of Buddhist temples that have historic meaning, in the mountains. Naksansa Temple has an impressive view close to the sea, and it has deep historic meaning for it was built during the King Munmu of Silla Dynasty. Bomunsa Temple and Bulguksa Temple were renowned from Silla Dynasty, and Sudeoksa Temple and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple have been there for hundreds of years tending to prayers of people wishing for peace. Many seniors head for mountains in search of Buddhist temples, taking an express bus every weekend to pray for peace for their family members and acquaintances.

Seniors keep walking every moment

According to announcement of a ticket booking website, there is a growing demand in young people for activities enjoyed in nature such as a zipline. On the other hand, seniors prefer destinations where they can appreciate beauty of nature while walking slowly. Yedang Reservoir Suspension Bridge and Badabuche Searoad of Jeongdongjin frequently visited by the elderly have a trails that are nicely built. The Sky Walk of Deungkisan, designed with glass floor for amazing view, like a hidden gem. German Village (Deutsches Dorf) and Cheongnamdae constantly attract seniors since they can take a walk leisurely while browsing the village with calm. Even though there are no dynamic activities, they take pictures for souvenir and memories while walking at a slow pace. This is the travel style of the senior generation. Unlike the young generation prioritizing a variety of experiences, this style shows that seniors tend to cherish every moment through their steps.

Enjoy forest therapy and lodging at the same time

Lodging takes up a great amount of budget and determines the characteristics of travel. Young people look for lodging that costs the least within the tight budget or enjoy the so-called "Hotel staycation" and leaves some pictures for social media. However, seniors are different. According to a questionnaire lodging near conducted by Korea Tourism Association, a majority of seniors opted for recreational forest. Seniors were not fond of facilities located in the city such as hotels and pensions or facilities focusing on interior design. The recreational forest is considered perfect lodging for seniors in the sense that it is near the forest and has cooking facilities. The recreational forests across the country prepare experience-based programs oriented to seniors to actively attract them. They offer an inexpensive price. Considering such advantages, it seems that recreational forest lodging will gain steady popularity.
